The Undergraduate Foreign Language Test (UFLT) and
Foreign Language Achievement Test (FLAT)
The FLATS is taken by CU-Boulder students who wish to be exempt from the 3-semester College of Arts & Sciences
foreign language requirement. (The College of Engineering and School of Business may also accept this test.) As
of May 31st, 2013 Testing Services will no longer be offering the UFTL. All foreign language testing will be done
through the FLATS starting June 1st, 2013.
There are 56 Language FLATS available by special order through BYU. Once the tester has completed the exam, tests
are sent back to BYU for grading. A final exemption as pass or fail will be sent to CU 4 to 6 weeks after the test
is taken, No credit hours are granted from these tests. NOTE: This test is not to be confused with the
placement exam which is mandatory for all freshmen and transfer students related to course registration. FLATS
exemption language tests cannot be used for placement purposes, nor can the placement exams be used for exemption
For information on foreign language PLACEMENT exams, call the Orientation Department at 303-492-4431 or the
